Advanced Professional Course Cluster in Special Education

This 12-credit course cluster in special education develops expertise in teaching children with exceptional learning needs in diverse settings. For teachers who already hold a master’s degree and an initial teaching license, this group of courses is designed to be used to move an initial license in early childhood education, elementary education, and ESL to professional status.

Coursework

Courses in this Advanced Professional Course Cluster address topic areas in content areas including the impact of various disabilities and their impact on learning and development, curriculum design for children with special needs, and assessing academic, social and behavioral domains of children’s learning. Two pedagogical courses are also offered, addressing assistive technologies and managing behavior.
Wheelock’s professional course cluster let’s you:

  • Complete an NCATE approved program;
  • Take classes close to work or home;
  • Move your initial DOE license to a professional license

Q: What do I need to enroll in the Advanced Professional Course Cluster in Special Education?
A:
A master’s degree and initial licensure in early childhood education, elementary education, or English as a second language is required for admission to this program.  

Q: When can I enroll in the program?
A: Students may matriculate in this program during the summer or fall semester, but you should discuss the best timing for you to begin the program with a faculty member before enrolling. Q: Can I complete this program and continue to work full-time?
A: Yes, in fact this is a part-time program designed for in-service teachers.
