Undergraduate Arts Major

Exciting Curriculum

In the Wheelock Arts major, students study the techniques and methods of three distinct art forms: music, theatre, and the visual arts. They then choose to specialize in one of the three areas. If you answer yes to one of the following questions, the arts major is for you:

  • Do you like to draw, paint, or take photographs?
  • Do you like to act, sing, or play an instrument?
  • Are you interested in exploring dramatic literature, visual arts, or music from around the world?

Outside the classroom, students view and exhibit work on campus in the Towne Art Gallery; attend and participate in major theatrical productions in the Wheelock Family Theatre; and play or sing in several Colleges of the Fenway performance groups. They also participate in the rich life of the arts in the Boston area.

Major Courses

Some of the unique offerings students can choose from within the three areas include African-American Music, Children's Theatre, Drama for Children, Painting, Cathedral and Castle. In addition, study tours are associated with some of courses.

Additional Degree Options

Minors are available in Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

Professional Advantages

In addition to contributing to your personal expressive and intellectual capacities, the Arts major connects creative work to professional practice for educators. You learn to use dramatic play, musical games, and art projects with skill and confidence in your professional life. You learn new ways of thinking about, discussing, and writing about plays, music, and artwork that you can make a part of an engaging curriculum.

Faculty Highlights

All members of the Arts department are known for their artistic and educational accomplishments. For example, two of our faculty, Susan Kosoff and Jane Staab, co-founded and run the Wheelock Family Theatre, an award-winning, non-profit, professional, equity theatre located right on Wheelock's campus. Another faculty member, Gregory Gómez, makes large-scale bronze sculptures for public spaces — most recently a relief that covers the side of a four-storey building in Tallahassee, FL. And yet another faculty member, Leland Clarke, is a noted expert on using music in working with young children.

Who You Can Become

The arts make you a better person, more interesting and more interested in the world around you. You may choose to pursue a career in the arts, but, if not, studying the arts pays dividends no matter what you want to be, and they have special relevance to the human services careers that most Wheelock students pursue.

Why Wheelock

You study with teachers who are active arts professionals — exhibiting, acting in and directing theatrical productions, making music, and writing. They help you understand the role of the arts in human culture, and work with you to unlock your own creativity, enhancing your own life and the lives of people with whom you engage.
