Math and Science Major

Exciting Curriculum

For students intending to become teachers, the Math/Science major offers exceptional preparation. The courses in the major are challenging, college-level classes, designed specifically to support future teachers. Not only will you learn relevant subject matter, but you will also learn that content by doing hands-on, minds-on activities that model the best ways of teaching mathematics and science. Two new options in the major focused specifically on mathematics and on science education will begin soon and are designed especially for people who want to be leaders in mathematics and science education.

We also offer an Environmental Sciences option, in conjunction with the Colleges of the Fenway. In this program, you will engage in relevant projects, such as testing the Muddy River for pollutants or studying the causes of asthma in urban areas. Finally, we have an interdisciplinary option that allows students to design their own program, drawing from all the resources in mathematics and science.

Major Courses

Some examples: Environmental Impacts, Marine Mammals, Introduction to Scientific Inquiry, Classical and Modern Geometries, Embryology, Physical Processes in the Human Body, and Probability and Statistics.

Additional Options

Minors are available in Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.

Professional Advantages

The Math/Science major offers you an opportunity to develop your mind — to improve your capacity to solve problems, to justify your reasoning, and to communicate that reasoning to others. It also offers an opportunity to gain a deep appreciation for some of humanity's greatest achievements. It will help you participate more in the world around you. For future teachers, the major offers excellent preparation in specialized mathematical knowledge for teaching and in inquiry-based teaching methods in both mathematics and science.

Faculty Highlights

Mike Williamson is the originator of the WhaleNet website that provides data on marine mammals for classroom use. Ellen Faszewski does research on the consequences of environmental damage to frogs and other amphibians. Debra Borkovitz works to develop mathematics materials and maintains a website of them.

Who Can You Become?

You can become a mathematics or science specialist in education, go to graduate school in mathematics or science education, be a teacher leader, or use your problem solving skills and other abilities to pursue something new.

Why Wheelock?

At most colleges, mathematics and science classes are geared toward students preparing for careers such as engineering or medical school, and these students have very specialized needs. At Wheelock, teaching mathematics and science to future teachers and other human service workers is the department's highest priority. All of our programs are geared toward your needs and interests. As you pursue your degree, you can also become a Mathematics Leader, who facilitates mathematics study groups; participates in a seminar to reflect, improve, and learn more math; and join an active student-led math club.
