Bachelor of Social Work Major

Studying social work at Wheelock provides you many opportunities to explore the different facets of being a social worker. You do internships in a variety of interesting places such as the Boston Public Schools, Fenway Community Health Center, the Brookline Senior Center, the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, and early intervention programs. You work with children of all age groups and their families. In the schools, you may work one-on-one with middle school and high school students to help them with social skills, decision-making, and behavior management. In other programs, you might help parents find services for their children and themselves, conduct home visits and school visits, and find after-school programs.

Degree Options

The BSW degree may be combined with a concentration in Juvenile Justice & Youth Advocacy.

Professional Advantages

Each student completes a 60-hour pre-practicum, followed by a 400-hour practicum in a variety of settings, including public or private organizations, hospitals, school settings, or community based human service programs. Wheelock's mission — to improve the lives of children and families — is the focus of the Social Work program.

Accreditation and Licensing

Wheelock is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Students who graduate with a BSW degree are eligible to earn a state license.

Faculty Highlights

BSW faculty are engaged in child welfare, policy and advocacy. Some have worked in Boston area schools, community health centers, and hospitals, and serve on the Board of the National Association of Social Workers, and the Massachusetts Chapter. They teach the theory and practice of social work with specialization in stress reduction, spiritual development, multicultural competence, international policy and social work practice, and developmental disabilities. They also work in emergency rooms and on disaster crisis teams, coordinate culture camps, and are published authors, poets, and photojournalists.

Wheelock offers many opportunities to explore different facets of being a social worker. Students learn about social justice, and how to translate this philosophy into direct social work practice. Students learn in small classes and collaborate with their peers in the Colleges of the Fenway. They also integrate what they learn in the classroom with unique field placements and service learning programs.
