Dean of Arts and Sciences

Shirley Malone-Fenner

The School of Arts and Sciences at Wheelock College is home to six academic program areas ― American Studies, Arts, Communications, Human Development, Humanities, and Math/Science, and. These programs provide students with a strong liberal arts education, which encompass the knowledge and skills required for a wide variety of career paths. Also, since it’s estimated that college students today will likely have four or five careers ― not just jobs ― over their professional lives, a strong liberal arts foundation provides you with the functional skills and flexibility to shift to new careers over your professional life.

Our liberal arts majors, minors and areas of focused study reflect four central academic concepts: integration with the professions, integration of theory and practice, integration of disciplines, and preparation to serve in multidisciplinary ways. Building on an innovative new interdisciplinary general education program, these programs provide a common core of experiences and learning ― creating an ideal basis for long-term professional success.

Our offerings respond to the demands of today's world by producing analytical thinkers and effective communicators who can apply an outlook grounded in an historical perspective of current issues. Across the majors, we develop habits of inquiry and an enjoyment of learning that prepares you for a lifetime of thoughtful decision making. They will also provide you with a set of experiences and values that transcend the classroom ― building skills and knowledge that are always relevant and sought after in the marketplace. And, perhaps most important, the greater understanding of the world around us that you gain from a liberal arts education will help you frame a solid sense of self and purpose, both professionally and personally.
